Edgewood College to become Edgewood University


Edgewood College in Madison, WI announced that it will become Edgewood University in July 2025.

Edgewood traces its roots to St. Regina Academy founded by the Dominican Sisters of Sinsinawa. The college was founded in 1927 as a junior college for women with a two-year liberal arts curriculum. The first baccalaureate degree was awarded in 1942.


East Texas A&M University

 

East Texas A&M University (ETAMU) unveiled its new name on the stone signs at the campus’s main entrance. East Texas A&M, formerly known as Texas A&M University-Commerce, adopted its new name on November 7, 2024, following a vote by The Texas A&M University System Board of Regents.

The institution was founded in Cooper, TX in 1889 as East Texas Normal College. It moved to Commerce, TX in 1894. The name changed to East Texas State Normal College in 1917, to East Texas State Teachers College in 1923, to East Texas State College in 1957, to East Texas State University in 1965, and to Texas A&M-Commerce in 1996.

Marist College Changes Name

 WXXI public radio provided interesting reporting on January 20, 2025 in "Marist College officially becomes "Marist University," with reporting by Jesse King.

Marist, located in Poughkeepsie, NY, was founded as Marian College in 1946. The name was changed to Marist College in 1960.

Southwestern Assemblies of God University is now Nelson University

Southwestern Assemblies of God University is changing its name.

The institution was founded initially via merger of three small bible schools as Southwestern Bible Institute in 1943. It later was known as Southwestern Bible College. In 1963 the name was changed to Southwestern Assemblies of God College and then again in 1994 to Southwestern Assemblies of God University. In 2024 the name was changed to Nelson University.

Union College is now Union Commonwealth University


Union College in Barbourville, KY is changing its name to Union Commonwealth University. Union was founded in 1879 and is affiliated with the United Methodist Church.

The College of Mount Saint Vincent becomes the University of Mount Saint Vincent


 The College of Mount Saint Vincent is now the University of Mount Saint Vincent. The institution located on Riverdale Avenue in the Bronx, New York enrolls just over 2,800 students

Mount Saint Vincent was founded as the Academy of Mount Saint Vincent in 1847 by the Sisters of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul of New York. The Academy was located with the Motherhouse at McGowan’s Pass at the northeast corner of what is now Central Park. The campus moved to Riverdale, N.Y. overlooking the Hudson River in 1859. The institutional charter was amended in 1911 to change the  name to the College of Mount Saint Vincent

Wiley College Name Change

 

Wiley College in Marshall, TX announced that it is changing its name to Wiley University. You can read more in "Wiley College announces name change as part of Homecoming festivities," posted by KSLA News on November 3, 2023.

Wiley was founded in 1873 and is affiliated with the United Methodist Church.

Union College Changes Name


Union College will become Union Adventist University as of May 2024 after a vote by the institution's Board of Trustees on October 2, 2023. 

Union is owned and operated by the Seventh-day Adventist Church and has a rich culture of faith-based values aligned with the church’s mission to serve the world.

Union was founded in 1891 and is located in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Emmanuel College in Geogia Changes Name


Emmanuel College in Franklin Springs, GA changed its name to Emmanuel University.

The institution was founded as Franklin Springs Institute in 1919. It closed briefly between 1931-1933 due to depression and then reopened as a high school and junior college. The name was changed in 1939 to Emmanuel College.

Nazareth College Changes its Name

Nazareth College in Rochester, NY changed its name to become Nazareth University. Nazareth was founded in 1924 by the Sisters of St. Joseph.

Olivet College Changes Name


 Trustees of Olivet College in Olivet, MI approved a name change to The University of Olivet.

Olivet is affiliated with the United Church of Christ and was founded in 1844. The name was changed briefly to Olivet Institute in 1847 and back to Olivet College in 1859.

Unity College Changes Its Name

Unity College announced in late February that it is changing its name to Unity Environmental University.

Dr. Melik Peter Khoury, President of Unity said. “This name better reflects who we are today as a multi-faceted institution that is committed to creating a better, more equitable world for future generations.”

The name change has recently been approved by the Maine Department of Education and the New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE).

The institution was founded as the Unity Institute of Liberal Arts and Sciences in 1966. The name changed to Unity College the following year in 1967.

Nyack College Changes Name

 
Nyack College has changed its name to Alliance University. The institution was founded as the Missionary Training Institute in 1882. The name was changed to Nyack Missionary College in 1956 and then to Nyack College in 1972. 

In 2018, Nyack College announced the intention to sell its 107-acre campus in Nyack and then moved its academic programs to its Lower Manhattan campus.

Westminster College in Utah Adopts New Name


The trustees of Westminster College in Salt Lake City, UT approved a name change for the institution and it will be known as Westminster University.

Westminster was founded as the Salt Lake Collegiate Institute, a preparatory school. It began offering college classes in 1897 as Sheldon Jackson College. It adopted a new name as Westminster College in 1902.

Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwe College Announces Name Change


Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwe College announced a change in name effective August 15, 2022, they will now be known as Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwe University. 


The institution was founded in 1982 as Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwa Community College to provide Anishinaabe communities with post-secondary and continuing education while advancing the language, culture, and history of the Ojibwe. 

LCOOC began offering bachelors degrees after 2018 and the name changed to Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwe College in 2019.

Jarvis Christian College Changes Its Name



Jarvis Christian College in Hawkins, TX changed its name to Jarvis Christian University.
 
Jarvis is a historically Black institution affiliated with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). It was founded in 1913.

Union County College Adopts New Name


Union County College with campuses in Cranford, Elizabeth, Plainfield, and Scotch Plains, New Jersey will be changing its name to Union College.

The institution was founded in 1933 as Union County Junior College. It merged with Union County Technical Institute in Scotch Plains and was renamed Union County College in 1983.

St. John Fisher College Changes Name


St. John Fisher College in Rochester, NY is changing its name to St. John Fisher University. You can also read more about the name change in a FAQ page on the college web site.

Dominican College becomes Dominican University of New York


Dominican College in Orangeburg, NY has changed its name to Dominican University of New York.

The institution was initially founded in 1952 by the Dominican Sisters of Blauvelt and offered a teacher preparation program for religious women. Lay students were admitted after 1957 and Dominican was coed after 1967. 

Dominican currently enrolls 1,700 students.
