Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwe College Announces Name Change

Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwe College announced a change in name effective August 15, 2022, they will now be known as Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwe University. 

The institution was founded in 1982 as Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwa Community College to provide Anishinaabe communities with post-secondary and continuing education while advancing the language, culture, and history of the Ojibwe. 

LCOOC began offering bachelors degrees after 2018 and the name changed to Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwe College in 2019.

United Tribes Technical College Celebrates 50th Anniversary

KXMB-TV, the CBS affiliate in Bismarck, ND posted "United Tribes Technical College celebrates 50th anniversary," with reporting by Aaron Fields. Fields interviewed college administrators and provides an interesting overview of the institution's history and bright prospects for the future.

United Tribes was initially founded as a training center. It gained accreditation in 1982 from the Higher Learning Commission and now serves as a 1994 Tribal Land-Grant Institution operated by five tribes: Three Affiliated Tribes of Fort Berthold, the Spirit Lake Tribe, the Sisseton-Wahpeton Oyate, the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, and the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians.

The college web site offers a 50 Year Chronology as part of their Building a Legacy of Success campaign associated with the centennial. The book is edited by Dennis J. Neumann and the 132-page document is available as a .pdf.  It provides "...starting points for learning more about activities, events, accomplishments and people associated with UTTC."

Closure of Comanche Nation College Announced

KSWO, the ABC affiliate in Lawton, OK reports that Comanche Nation College will close.  The 2-year, public institution enrolled just under 50 students.  It was initially chartered in 2002 and opened in 2005.

Scott Raines of The Lawton Constitution also reports on the decision by the Comanche Nation business committee in "Tribe Closing College."

Navajo Technical University (NM)

An article in The Daily Times of Farmington, NM by Noel Lyn Smith describes an upcoming Birth of a University Celebration planned by Navajo Technical University highlighting the institution's recent name change in July 2013.

NTU was founded in 1979 as the Navajo Skills Center in Crownpoint, NM.  It was designated as a land grant college in 1979 and became Crownpoint Institute of Technology in 1985.  The name then changed to Navajo Technical College in 2006.
