Tennessee's Defunct Colleges

Bill Carey authored, "Tennessee's list of defunct colleges keeps growing." It was published December 12, 2022 by the Elizabethton (TN) Star.

Carey cites both recent and past closures in the state. He closes by urging readers to "...appreciate the small private colleges and universities that remain...it’s not inevitable they have made it this far, and it’s not inevitable that they will continue to exist."

You can visit the College History Garden blog for an Index to Institutions by State that have closed, merged, or changed their names or for the specific list for Tennessee.

You can also visit College History Garden boards on Pinterest by state for historical images including 115 or more from Tennessee.

Ohio University in 1873: As Seen through the Eyes of Maggie Boyd

I gave a shout-out in early 2018 to the archives at Indiana University for their active and effective use of social media, "Day in the Life of a College Student in 1890s..."

Today, I'll feature Ohio University Archives and Special Collections and University Libraries.  They are currently hosting an exhibit, "Women at Ohio University, 150 Years of Life and History," and sent a tweet this morning linking to a diary of Maggie Boyd in the archives, the first OU woman graduate.
The archives also maintains a Pinterest board, @MaggieBoyd1873's World, with links to institutional publications, photographs, slide shows, research, and other items related to Maggie Boyd and her time at the institution.
The archives also used Twitter to publish entries from Maggie's senior diary using @MaggieBoyd1873.

Day in the Life of a College Student in 1890s...and, a few bonus links to other resources...

Julia Kilgore of the the Indiana University Archives authored an interesting post, "Sincerely Yours: a day in the life of a new student," using letters of a new student who came to the campus in 1890 with an interest in studying history.  I encourage readers to visit Blogging Hoosier History and scan through some of their other posts.

The IU Archives also maintains an active and effective social media presence through Twitter [@IUBArchives], the Indiana University Archives page on Facebook , or on Instagram.

I've found other college and university archives are also creatively using social media and really enjoy following their posts or tweets to discover new resources related to institutional history.

For those on Twitter, I've created a public list that may be helpful, Archives and Spec Coll, where you can view tweets from a variety of institutional archives in one place.

Pinterest can also be a useful source of historical images related to institutional history.  I created a Google docs table with entries that link to Pinterest pages created by institutions using the platform.  I update the table periodically and changes are reflected through the "College History on Pinterest..." page.

Or, you might be interested in visiting the College History Garden page on Pinterest, where there are separate boards for each state and a number of special focus boards.
If you know of archives or college history sites that may be of interest to College History Gardeners, feel free to post any suggestions and comments below or send an email.

College History on Pinterest...#2

As noted in the previous post, I have enjoyed pinning over 690 images related to the history of colleges and universities and organizing them onto various boards by state or sector.  There are several institutions with quite a few interesting historical images and I've highlighted a few below:

The Historic Marygrove board for Marygrove College (MI) currently offers 50 images.

The Vintage Simmons Photos board by Simmons College (MA) currently has 70 images.

And the CCArchives board with photos of Columbia College (MO) includes 55 pinned images.

College History on Pinterest

I've been exploring use of Pinterest as a way to organize and share images of institutions that have closed.  Tools available through Pinterest make it easy to pin images found in searches and shorten the time needed when I want to return to an image or page.  As an example, one board is devoted to advertising where I pin images of things like post cards, newspaper ads, and even a matchbook cover or roadside sign that institutions used in their marketing campaigns.

A number of higher education institutions and their libraries or archives are also exploring use of Pinterest to expand awareness of their resources. This will be the first of several posts highlighting Pinterest boards containing images for those interested in history of colleges...watch for few more posts in the near future...or, explore Pinterest yourself and post a comment below with the names of other boards focusing on history of colleges and universities.

Bluffton University (OH) Archives and Special Collections offers 13 boards with 126 pins that stand apart from most of the other boards with their focus on merchandise like beanies, pennants and thimbles.

Mount Holyoke College (MA) Archives and Special Collections probably has the most extensive presence on Pinterest with more than 1,400 images pinned on 46 boards documenting the institution's history.
