Illinois Valley Community College Celebrates Centennial

Illinois Valley Community College is celebrating the centennial of its founding in 1924 with classes held in the La Salle-Peru High School. IVCC President Tracy Morris dedicated a mural as part of activities surrounding the anniversary and you can read more in an article, "History in the details: IVCC dedicates 100th anniversary mural. Dots represent 160 programs taught in the past, present at the college," with reporting by Maribeth M. Wilson. 


The institution changed its name from La Salle-Peru-Oglesby Junior College in 1966. IVCC is the second oldest public community college in Illinois and you can learn more the College History page of their website.

Roxbury Community College is marking the 50th anniversary of its founding in 1973. The institution is located in Boston, MA and currently enrolls 1,214 students.

Eastern Kentucky University Celebrates Sesquicentennial


Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond, KY is preparing to celebrate the sesquicentennial of its founding. You can read more in "Celebrating 150 Years of Teaching on The Campus Beautiful."

EKU is located on the campus of the former Central University was founded on September 22, 1874.  "The first campus facility, the University Building, was constructed the same year. Central University merged with Centre College in 1901, leaving behind the eight buildings that made up the campus. After the Centre College merger was completed, the Kentucky General Assembly established the Eastern Kentucky State Normal School."

The name changed to Eastern Kentucky State Normal School and Teachers College in 1922; to Eastern Kentucky State Teachers College in 1930; to Eastern Kentucky State College in 1948; then to Eastern Kentucky University in 1966.

Drury University Prepares to Celebrate 150th Anniversary


Drury University in Springfield, MO is preparing to celebrate the sesquicentennial of its founding in 1873.

The institution was initially founded as Springfield College. The name changed to Drury College within six months following gift of $25,000 from S.F. Drury of Olivet, Michigan. Drury absorbed Iberia Junior College in 1951 and changed its name to Drury University in 2000. Drury has an historical affiliation with the United Church of Christ.

75th Anniversary for South Georgia Technical College


South Georgia Technical College in Americus, GA recently celebrated its 75th Anniversary.

The institution was founded in 1948 as South Georgia Trade and Vocational School. The name changed in 1963 to South Georgia Technical and Vocational School and in 1968, to South Georgia Technical Institute. The current name of South Georgia Technical College was selected in 2000.

75th Anniversary for Salt Lake Community College


Salt Lake Community College in Salt Lake City, UT is celebrating the 75th anniversary of its founding in 1948.  You can visit the 75th Anniversary webpage to find information on upcoming events. There is also a short YouTube video, timeline, and other anniversary resources.

The institution was initially founded as Salt Lake Area Vocational School. The name changed to Salt Lake Trade Technical Institute in 1959 and to Salt Lake Community College in 1987.

Wiley College Celebrates Sesquicentennial


Wiley College is celebrating the 150th anniversary of its founding in 1873 and there are a number of activities planned this week. The 150th Anniversary webpage includes a brief historical sketch plus details for planned activities.

The college will host an “Oral History Project and Reception” on March 13th in the Thomas Winston Cole Sr. Library. A Sesquicentennial chapel service will be held on March 14th followed by a premiere of the film "Freedom" on March 15th.  Then on March 17th, a “Celebration Under the Stars” event and the sesquicentennial convocation in Wiley’s pedestrian plaza will be held.

75th Anniversary for Orange Coast College


 Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa, California is kicking off a celebration of its 75th anniversary. The first classes were held in 1948 and the campus was built on the former Santa Anna Army Air Base.

Carthage College Marks 175th Anniversary with Placement of Marker

The Fort Madison (IA) Daily Democrat published "Carthage College celebrates 175 years" on October 24, 2022. The article coincides with the unveiling of a historical marker in Carthage, IL. 

Carthage College President John Swallow along with alumni and friends of Carthage College gathered at the entrance pillars to the former campus in Carthage to mark the college’s 175th anniversary.

While Carthage College has operated in Kenosha, WI since 1962, it was founded in Hillsboro, IL in 1847 as The Literary and Technological Institute of the Lutheran Church of the Far West. 

It was soon became known as Hillsboro College. It then moved to Springfield, IL in 1852 and operated at Illinois State University before moving to Carthage, IL in 1870. 

Campus buildings remain prominent in Carthage. Robert Morris College occupied the campus from 1965 until it moved to the Chicago area.

50th Anniversary of West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine

West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine in Lewisburg, WV is celebrating the 50th anniversary of its founding in 1972. The institution was initially known as Greenbriar School of Osteopathic Medicine for four years. Visit the 50th Anniversary webpage for more information on planned activities.

Florida Gateway College Begins 75th Anniversary Celebration


Florida Gateway College in Lake City, FL is beginning a yearlong celebration of its founding 1947 as the Forest Ranger School. Visit the 75th anniversary web page for planned activities.

The institution initially utilized structures that remained from a World War II-era naval air station. In 1961, the state of Florida created Lake City Junior College on the campus of the old forestry school. It became Lake City Community College in 1970 and Florida Gateway College on July 1, 2010.

Lyon College Celebrates Sesquicentennial


 Lyon College in Batesville, AR is preparing to celebrate the sesquicentennial of its founding in 1872

Events will kick off with ScotsFest (Homecoming & Annual Arkansas Scottish Festival) on October 14th-16th, with daily activities throughout the following week. Founders' Week celebrations will culminate on October 22nd with the inauguration of Lyon College's 19th President, Dr. Melissa Taverner, and a Black Tie Gala.

Union University Bicentennial

Union University in Jackson, TN is beginning a bicentennial celebration. Union is an heir of three antebellum Tennessee schools, West Tennessee College and its predecessor, Jackson Male Academy, both located at Jackson, and of Union University, located at Murfreesboro.

The University of North Georgia Begins Sesquicentennial Celebration

 
The University of North Georgia (UNG) began its yearlong Sesquicentennial Celebration in mid-August

The 150th Anniversary web pages offer a schedule of events, historical timeline, digital exhibits, and much more.

A short YouTube video, "Sesquicentennial at UNG," provides an overview of the history.

The institution was founded as North Georgia Agricultural College in 1873. The name changed to North Georgia College in 1929, then to North Georgia College and Sate University in 1996. It become the University of North Georgia in 2012 after a merger with Gainesville State College. 

UNG is one of only six federally designated senior military colleges, which also include The Citadel, Norwich University, Texas A&M University, Virginia Tech, and Virginia Military Institute.

75th Anniversary for Manor College


 Manor College in Jenkintown, PA has been celebrating its 75th anniversary in 2022. A post this week on the college website explores the history through stories and artifacts, "The Manor College Foxes? As evidenced by a small glass, Manor College once went by the Foxes."

The institution was founded in 1947 as St. Macrina College by the Ukrainian Sisters of St. Basil the Great. The name changed to Manor College in 1959.

Pasco-Hernando State College Celebrates 50th Anniversary


Pasco-Hernando State College is celebrating its 50th anniversary. The institution was founded as Pasco-Hernando Community College and the name was changed to Pasco–Hernando State College on January 21, 2014.

The institution serves Pasco and Hernando counties and is part of the Florida College System. It operates additional campuses in Brooksville, Dade City, New Port Richey, Spring Hill, and Wesley Chapel.

Lawrence University Celebrates 175th Anniversary

Lawrence University in Appleton, WI is celebrating the 175th anniversary of its founding in 1847 as Lawrence Institute. Lawrence was "...one of the first co-educational colleges in the country. In 1874, the Conservatory of Music was established. In 1913, the institution adopted the name Lawrence College to underscore its commitment to undergraduate liberal education. And in 1964, Lawrence again assumed the name Lawrence University when it was consolidated with Milwaukee-Downer College for Women."

Southern Utah University Celebrates Anniversary

Southern Utah University in Cedar City, UT is celebrating the 125th anniversary of its founding in 1897.

You can explore SUU's history by visiting the 125th anniversary page with links to a calendar of events, timeline of institutional history, podcasts, artwork, videos, and more.

SUU was founded as the Branch Normal School. The name changed to Branch Agricultural College in 1913. It became the College of Southern Utah in 1953, Southern Utah State College in 1969, and finally, Southern Utah University in 1991.

You can travel through Cedar City and southern Utah on a scenic tour visiting historical sites associated with SUU's founding. The KSL.com website offers "Explore SUU's founding with a self-guided tour of southern Utah," that describes the route with locations in Cedar City and the surrounding area. The tour can be a full-day trip by adding additional locations in the region or you can drive the full loop in less than two hours.


Additionally, you can view a short historical reenactment, "Back Up the Mountain," that details the amazing story of determined men and women who founded SUU. The video was produced in the area and many cast members and extras are proud descendants of the university's founders.

Adelphi University Set to Celebrate 125th Anniversary


 Adelphi University is preparing to celebrate the 125th anniversary of its founding in 1863 as Adelphi Academy. The name changed to Adelphi College in 1896 and to Adelphi University in 1963.
