Gale College (WI)


The Old Main for Gale College in Galesville, WI is still serving as a community resource.  A Chronology page provides information on the various institutions that used the site from an initial charter granted in 1854 for Galesville University.

Burritt College (TN)


A history of Burritt College is available at http://www.therestorationmovement.com/burritt.htm.  The institution operated from 1848-1939 in Spencer, Tennessee.

The Burritt Alumni Association maintains a Facebook page with photographs and other information.

Study of Factors Leading to Closure of 40 Colleges

Terry Province studied early indicators linked to college closure and the dissertation is available.  His review of literature in Chapter 2 does a nice job of highlighting early indicators from previous studies.  The statistical analysis of 40 institutions led to identification of the most significant indicators for the study period between 1965-2005.

Lake Forest council agrees to let old college building be torn down.  See an earlier post with brief history and links to other information on the institution.

La Grange Synodical College (TN)


La Grange Synodical College was an institution for young men in Tennessee.  The second annual catalog [1858-1859] of La Grange Synodical College is available through the Internet Archive.

The catalog lists faculty and provides details of the curriculum.  There were 170 students by class [Seniors-7, Juniors-15, Sophomores-31, Freshmen-33, 23 students enrolled in the Scientific Department, and 61 students enrolled in the Preparatory Department].

Vennard College



The Vennard College Alumni Association maintains a web site that includes a page with links to photographs of students and the campuses.


An earlier post at the time of Vennard's closing in 2008 provides a brief history of the institution. Vennard was founded in Chicago in 1910 and moved to Iowa in 1951.

Lasting Impact of Name Changes


Riley Snyder writes on the implications of institutional name changes in the November 14, 2011 issue of The Nevada Sagebrush. The author does a nice job of capturing the longterm implications of what may seem like a simple change.
