Interesting article in the Lagos Daily Independent by Chijioke Okoronkwo on efforts by Alvan Ikoku Federal College of Education to attain university status. The institution was founded in 1963 as the Advanced Teachers’ Training College, Owerri. It closed during Nigeria's civil war (1967-1970) and reopened at the present site after the war. It became a College of Education after May 31, 1973. Federal control began in 2007 and the institution now enrolls nearly 15,000 students.
