Grand View College (IA)

That All Good Seed Strike Root is a centennial history of Grand View College written by Thorvald Hansen. The book includes 264 pages and is available for $10.00 through the Grand View Bookstore.

Hansen provides an interesting history of the institution founded by the Danish Evangelical Lutheran Church in America in 1896. Pastoral training was a primary focus during the early years with faculty recruited from Denmark. Hansen offers a particularly good exploration of the tension between proponents of the Folk School tradition and those wanting to offer a more classical curriculum.

Grand View was located in Des Moines, IA. An academy or high school department was added in 1912. Instruction at the junior college level began in 1924 and Grand View was accredited by the Iowa State Department of Public Instruction in 1938. The North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools extended accreditation in 1959. A theological seminary was relocated to Maywood, Illinois in 1960. A name change to Grand View University took place in November 2008.
