Alice H. Songe's American Universities and Colleges: A Dictionary of Name Changes (The Scarecrow Press, Inc., 1978) serves as an important base for building a list of institutions that have closed, merged, or changed their names.  It is available for limited preview through Google Books.  Songe's book is also cited by Brenner in his preface for The Encyclopedia of College & University Name Histories.
