Donald G. Tewksbury's book, The Founding of American Colleges and Universities Before the Civil War (Archon Books, 1965), is one of the more commonly cited works among historians of higher education in the United States.
I would certainly encourage those who are interested to also read Burke's American Collegiate Populations. In testing and rejecting a number of Tewksbury's assertions, Burke offers insights that help with understanding the expansion of higher education across the country.
