Alcorn State University will be celebrating its sesquicentennial in 2021. The institution was founded in 1871 on the campus of the former Oakland College that closed in 1860. The name changed in 1878 to Alcorn Agricultural and Mechanical College and in 1974, to Alcorn State University.
Alcorn is the oldest public historically black land-grant institution in the United States and the second-oldest state-supported institution of higher learning in Mississippi.
