The institution was founded in 1929 as Amarillo Junior College. It served as the first Texas Junior College district established independent of a public school district. The classes were held on September 16, 1929 with seven faculty members and eighty-six students. In 1995, the state legislature transferred Texas State Technical College–Amarillo to Amarillo College.
