Dillard was founded as Union Normal School. In 1889 a medical department opened, including a schools of pharmacy and nursing. The medical department was named Flint Medical College and it was affiliated with Sarah Goodridge Hospital and Nurse Training School. The medical college was discontinued in 1911 with the hospital and nursing school continuing under the name of Flint-Goodridge Hospital which later merged in 1920 with Straight College to form Dillard University.
