Lessons from Sweet Briar...a reminder of how we benefit from a good editorial page

An editorial for The Roanoke Times on Thursday, March 5, 2015 provides some historical context for the decision of the Sweet Briar board of trustees.  I am impressed that the authors of the editorial referenced Daleville College and Marion College...along with more recent closures at Saint Paul's College and Virginia Intermont College.  The institutions are representative of many other small institutions that flourished for a time before ultimately closing.  While time will tell whether supporters of Sweet Briar will be able to reverse the decision of their board, it is important to remember that higher education dynamic with new institutions rising at the same time that others close.

A second editorial this morning on the web site of The News & Advance from Lynchburg, VA highlights the stories of three individuals who are representative of many who have served Sweet Briar over the years.
The two editorials reminded me of how much I appreciate good journalism and the importance of the editorial role performed by the media.
