University of North Georgia

The Georgia State Board of Regents approved University of North Georgia as the new name for two institutions previously known as Gainesville State College and North Georgia College and State University

Gainesville State College was initially founded in 1966 as Gainesville Junior College.  The name was changed to Gainesville College in 1987 and Gainesville State College in 2005.

North Georgia College and State University was founded in Dahlonega, GA in 1873 as North Georgia Agricultural College.  The name changed to North Georgia College in 1929.  University status was gained in 1996.
