Defunct Colleges in Nashville: Droughons, Radnor, Scarritt & Ward Seminary

Several Nashville institutions that have closed are highlighted in blogs. Terry Baker's "Strength and Beauty": Buford College of Nashville, 1901-1920 summarizes the history of the institution educating young women. Mary Elizabeth Burgess founded the institution in Clarksville in 1886 prior to relocation to Nashville.

The Historic Nashville blog offers pictures and brief historical summaries for several institutions: Draughons College, Radnor College, Scarritt College, and Ward Seminary for Young Ladies. This last institution was founded in 1865 by William E. Ward and his wife, Eliza Hudson Ward.

  1. I assume this is the same Draughons College that was a trade school with branches all over Tennessee. When I taught at a Tennessee college we sometimes had new students who would not be happy that they could not transfer their credits because Draughons was not regionally accredited. I was in Tennessee when it closed. Went broke I think? Possibly mid-semester.
