John Haller offers a very interesting history in
Kindly Medicine: Physio-Medicalism in America, 1836-1911. While focusing on Physio-Medicalism, the author successfuly places the efforts of those involved among the many alternative ideas held by members of the broader medical community during the period. Thirteen physio-medical colleges opened and ultimately closed.
