The institution was initially founded as LaGrange Female Seminary. The name was changed to LaGrange Collegiate Seminary for Young Ladies in 1850, to Southern and Western Female College in 1852, and to Southern Female College in 1854. It was also sometimes called Western Georgia Female College and was informally called Cox College by the 1890s.
The institution moved to Manchester, later College Park 1895. Part of the college moved to East Point, Georgia in 1890's and was sometimes called Cox College and Conservatory. The institution closed 1923-1933 and later reopened in 1933.
