College Hill Neighborhood in Wichita, KS

Jeff A. Roth offers an interesting history of attempts by various promoters to establish colleges during the late 1800's in what is known as the College Hill neighborhood of Wichita, Kansas. The article appears in The College Hill Commoner.

References are made to Wichita Ladies College (affiliated with the Congregational Church and later renamed Fairmount College in 1887) and to Wichita University (German Reformed Church...closed in 1893 and later used by the Sisters of St. Joseph as a convent and orphanage until 1913 when the building burned). The article also mentions attempts to encourage Presbyterians and Methodists to set up institutions in Wichita.
