William B. Jones has authored a wonderful history of Southwestern University titled, To Survive and Excel: The Story of Southwestern University, 1840-2000. The first few chapters are of particular interest to those interested in colleges that have closed. Jones offers extensive background for predecessor institutions: Rutersville College, Wesleyan College, McKenzie College, and Soule University.
