Katharine Gibbs: Beyond White Gloves

Doherty joined the faculty of the Katherine Gibbs School in Boston in the late 1970's and later served as an academic dean and board member until the school closed in 2011.  She brings a unique perspective in her description of both Gibbs and the schools she operated.  Doherty has also set up an interesting web site with links to a variety of resources.

Gibbs Schools traced their roots to a career school founded in Rhode Island in 1911.  Schools were later opened in Boston, New York and other cities.  Doherty identifies several distinct periods in the history:  from the founding until the death of Gibbs in 1934; family ownership until 1968; and a final period of corporate ownership.
