Sierra Nevada College Changes Name to Become Sierra Nevada University

KTVN-TV Reno's CBS affiliate reported this week in "Sierra Nevada College to Change Name" that the Incline Valley, NV institution has changed its name to Sierra Nevada University.

Sierra Nevada University was founded in 1969 and operates as a private, not for profit. The enrollment is approximately 890 students.

Education Corporation of America Closes over 75 Campuses

The Education Corporation of America headquarter in Birmingham, AL announced today that it will close more than 75 sites that enroll roughly 20,000 students.  The company began the process of notifying students and employees.  The sites include those operating as Brightwood College, Brightwood Career Institute, Ecotech Institute, Golf Academy of America and Virginia College.

KCRA-TV in Sacramento, CA posted "Brightwood College closing Modesto, Sacramento campuses" on its website.

Thirty-two sites are listed for Brightwood College in eight states on the IPEDS College Navigator site and twenty-seven sites in eleven states are listed for Virginia Colleges.

Anniversaries of Great Basin College and UNLV featured by Nevada Public Radio

Nevada Public Radio's Yesterdays series featured histories of the state's institutions in recent programs.

Great Basin College was the focus of a program on November 7th with an emphasis on local leaders in Elko, NV who worked to establish the institution in 1967 as the first community college in the state.  Initially known as Elko Community College, the name changed to Northern Nevada College in 1973 and to Great Basin College in 1995.

"UNLV at 60" commemorates the first campus building that opened in 1957.  The post was published on October 27th and provides a sketch of the institution's history.  Extension classes were first offered by the University of Nevada, Reno in 1951 to serve the growing Las Vegas population.  The institution was first known as Nevada Southern University and changed the name to the University of Nevada, Las Vegas in 1965.

Le Cordon Bleu Colleges of Culinary Art will no longer enroll new students

Inside Higher Ed reports on December 17, 2015 that Le Cordon Bleu Colleges of Culinary Art will no longer accept new students and intends to close in 2017.  The for-profit operates sixteen locations around the country and is owned by Career Education Corporation.  The table below includes enrollment and accreditation information for each location from IPEDS.

Morrison University in Reno, NV is Closing

Aurora Sain reports for the Reno Gazette-Journal that Morrison University will close.  Morrison was founded in 1902 as the Nevada Business Institute.  In recent years it was owned by Education Training Corporation after an acquisition of Anthem Education in 2012.  

Charlie Tyson provided details for Inside Higher Ed as Anthem Education filed for bankruptcy August 25th after attempting to sell a number of campuses around the country.
