Honolulu Community College Celebrates 100th Anniversary

Kelli Trifonovitch offers a brief and interesting historical sketch in a post for the University of Hawai'i News "Honolulu Community College kicks off centennial celebration" on February 27, 2020. 

The post includes a number of historical photographs, a couple of short videos, and a list of upcoming events planned to mark the anniversary.

The institution was founded in 1920 and was initially known as Honolulu Vocational School and Honolulu Technical School. 

It then became part of the University of Hawaiʻi after Community College Act of 1964. Honolulu Community College currently enrolls more than 3,500 students.

University of Hawai'i Maui College

An article by Nanea Kalani in the Honolulu Star Advertiser highlights the expanding mission and success of the University of Hawai'i Maui College in recent years.  Kalani notes the importance of the change in name from Maui Community College in 2010.  The institution had previously served as one of seven community colleges in the ten campus University of Hawai'i system.

The University of Hawai'i was founded as the Maui Vocational School established in 1931. In 1958 the Department of Public Instruction authorized the name change to Maui Technical School. In 1964, the Hawai'i State Legislature enacted the Community College Act establishing a statewide community college system under the University of Hawai'i and Maui Technical School was incorporated into this system on July 1, 1965.  The institution was authorized in 1966 to confer the Associate in Arts and the Associate in Science degrees and the name was change to Maui Community College.
